Amaran (transl. ”The Immortal”) is a 2024 Indian Tamil-language biographical action war film written and directed by Rajkumar Periasamy. Produced by Raaj Kamal Films International in association with Sony Pictures Films India, the film stars Sivakarthikeyan as Major Mukund Varadarajan, alongside Sai Pallavi, Rahul Bose, and Bhuvan Arora. Based on India’s Most Fearless: True Stories of Modern Military Heroes by Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh, the film follows Indhu Rebecca Varghese, Mukund’s wife, as she recounts his life while traveling to New Delhi to receive his posthumous Ashoka Chakra.
Officially announced in January 2022 as Sivakarthikeyan 21, the film’s title was revealed in February 2024. Principal photography began in May 2023 with shoots in Kashmir, Chennai, and Pondicherry, wrapping up after a year. The film features music by G. V. Prakash Kumar, cinematography by debutant CH Sai, and editing by R. Kalaivanan.
Released worldwide on 31 October 2024, coinciding with Diwali, Amaran received critical acclaim for its performances, direction, screenplay, and music. It set multiple box office records, becoming the second highest-grossing Tamil film of 2024, the ninth highest-grossing Indian film of the year, the eighth highest-grossing Tamil film of all time, and the sixth highest-grossing film in Tamil Nadu.
